Do you have to enroll in Medicare when you turn 65?

Not necessarily, if you have creditable insurance (verified by the Human Resource Department document) you do not have to enroll in Medicare.  It is wise do your research by comparing the cost as well as the plan benefits for each option.

Are there penalties if I do not enroll in Medicare?

Penalties are possible:

  • If you do not have "creditable coverage" offered by a company with more than 20 employees
  • If you are 65 and do not have health insurance through an employer or spouse's employer - (Cobra, Covered California or an Individual Family Plan does not count)  for more than a period of
  • If you have Original Medicare and no Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) for a period of 63 days or longer
